- (ASSOCIATE) PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE & DIRECTOR OF STARTUP LEGAL GARAGE

University of California College of the Law, San Francisco (“UC Law SF,” formerly, “UC Hastings”), located in downtown San Francisco, seeks applicants for a contract (non-tenure-track) faculty role. This full-time faculty position is situated within the law school’s Center for Innovation and includes managing and teaching courses associated with the award-winning program, Startup Legal Garage. Startup Legal Garage students serve as the legal solution for 50 early-stage tech and life-science companies each year, with the work supervised for free by outside lawyers. Responsibilities include, without limitation:
- Serving as Director of the Startup Legal Garage (“SLG”), including administering the program under the supervision of
Professor and Director of the Center for Innovation Robin Feldman. - Recruiting startups to apply, recruiting lawyers to supervise the work, fundraising, and publicizing the SLG program.
- Managing the fieldwork components of SLG classes under the supervision of Robin Feldman.
- Teaching classroom components of SLG.
- Teaching up to one non-SLG doctrinal course per semester as assigned by the Provost & Academic Dean.
- Assuming other non-teaching faculty duties as assigned by the Academic Dean.
The position is full-time. Contract lengths for Professors of Practice are 1-5 years and may be renewed. The faculty rank is Lecturer, with a Professor of Practice working title (or Associate Professor of Practice for persons with fewer than five years of full-time teaching experience). The start date is June 1, 2026.
This is a year-round position; the Professor of Practice is obligated to teach forcredit classes only during the fall and spring semesters but is responsible for working on Startup Legal Garage matters over the summer months.
Interested candidates must have the following qualifications:
- JD degree.
- Bar membership.
- At least 3 years of practice or teaching experience.
Prior teaching experience is strongly preferred.
The anticipated starting base compensation range is $99,275 - $109,725, depending on prior law school teaching experience. The role also includes a faculty development account. This position qualifies for the Full UC Benefits Package.
